Lateral spread of light adaptation in the rat retina.

چکیده
Recordings from the rat optic tract fibers were used to assess changes in sensitivity under various conditions of adaptation. An adapting background which excites only a small fraction of the rods can yet cause a several-fold change in sensitivity. A small adapting spot much more effectively decreases the cell’s sensitivity to a superimposed test than to test spots in positions far from the adapting locus. Thus, adaptation spreads laierally but not uniformly throughout the ganglion cell center. Scattered lieht does not account for the spread, since a displaced adapting spot can be more effective than one &perimposed on the test spot. _

The lateral spread of light adaptation in cat horizontal cell responses.
To investigate the sites of light adaptation processes in the mammalian distal retina, we studied the lateral spread of adaptation signals in cone-driven cat horizontal (H-) cell responses. The size of the adaptation pool is compared to the receptive field for H-cell responses. H-cell activity was recorded intracellularly in the optically intact, in vivo eye. It is demonstrated that light adapt...

متن کاملStructure and arrangement of photoreceptors in the retina of big eye kilka, Clupeonella grimmi (Kessler 1877)
The big eye kilka, Clupeonella grimmi, is a marine fish living in depth of 20 to 200 meter of the Caspian Sea. Its eye and retina were processed for histological and SEM studies. Paraffin embedded retina was cut radially and tangentially in 5 ?m thickness and stained with hematoxylin and eosin method. The unstained sections were manipulated for SEM image observations. Tangential retinal sect...

In this study, the morphology and organization of the retina of Caspian kutum and fish response to ambient light as retinomotor reaction was investigated. The Rutilus frisii subsp. kutum is an anadromous fish and important native fish specimen of Caspian Sea. The specimens were obtained from Shahid Ansari Teleost Reproduction and Culture center (Guilan province, Iran). For light and dark adapta...
متن کاملLateral Inhibition in the Vertebrate Retina: The Case of the Missing Neurotransmitter
Lateral inhibition at the first synapse in the retina is important for visual perception, enhancing image contrast, color discrimination, and light adaptation. Despite decades of research, the feedback signal from horizontal cells to photoreceptors that generates lateral inhibition remains uncertain. GABA, protons, or an ephaptic mechanism have all been suggested as the primary mediator of feed...
